The Comet Hitchin Sunday Football League. Athletico lift George John Cup in thriller. On Tuesday 8th May the George John Cup Final was played at Hitchin Town between Premier Division sides Athletico Hitchin and Cannon. In what turned out to be an entertaining game of end to end football there were a total of eight goals scored but it was impossible to predict until the very last few minutes of the match which team would end up triumphant. Cannon got off to a flying start and fired themselves into a 2-0 lead within the first ten minutes thanks to a brace from Robert Badrick. It took Athletico a bit longer to settle down but they got themselves back into the game when they pulled one back thanks to Ian Hutchison. Early in the second half Athletico deservedly got an equaliser through Carl Albon before Cannon scored through Jamie Farrar to go 3-2 ahead. About ten minutes later Cameron Brawley got Athletico back on level terms and although both teams went gung ho for the victory neither could get the required breakthrough. It looked as though the game was heading to extra time until Chris Reeves and then Ian Hutchison with his second of the match secured victory for Athletico with a few minutes left on the clock. Last Sunday saw the last league game of the season being played. It was in the Premier Division where Oceans Eleven faced PJ Hitchin knowing that a win would see them crowned as champions. For PJ though a draw was good enough for them to take the title. It was the home side that took the spoils with a well deserved 4-0 win. Getting the goals for Oceans were Junior Morrison and Aaron Harvey who bagged themselves a brace each. Roll of honour for 2011/12 season : Premier Division Champions : Oceans Eleven |

The Comet Hitchin Sunday Football League. Lewis Taylor Wins Challenge Cup for FC Wizard. Last Sunday saw FC Wizard, champions of Division One and PJ Hitchin, who are chasing the title in the Premier Division face each other in the final of the Challenge Cup at Hitchin Town. Wizard had the better of the first half and managed to use the flanks and get behind the PJ back line. Dan Eely in the PJ goal had to make a great double save in order to ensure the score remained goalless at half time. The second half was much the same as the first with Wizard have the better chances. Mid way through the half Lewis Taylor used his pace to get behind the PJ defence and calmly place the ball past the advancing keeper to get what proved to be the winning goal for Wizard. As expected PJ applied some pressure towards the end but couldn’t find a way through a resolute Wizard defence and a new name is now on the Challenge Cup. There were just three league games played and these were all in Division One. Bedford Arms lost 6-1 at home against Wymondley Park Old Boys. If Wymondley win their last game of the season next Sunday they will finish fourth in the table. Dial Square and Dynamo Letchworth picked up a point each following their 3-3 draw. The point for Dial Square means that they move up a place in the table to ninth. HTS Bar Absolute Reserves won 4-1 at home against AC Malone. There was one game played on Tuesday 1st May. This was in the Premier Division and saw PJ Hitchin play at home against Cannon. A 1-0 win for PJ saw them move to the top of the table three points ahead of Oceans Eleven. The two team’s play each other next week end and as they both have identical goal differences the winner will be crowned Premier Division champions. A draw would also be enough to see PJ successfully defend their crown. |

In the first game Wymondley won by a score of 3-1 but the second game was much more one sided with Wymondley again winning but this time by a score 0f 7-2. Also in the Division Bedford Arms lost narrowly at home against Dynamo Letchworth by the odd goal in seven. HTS Bar Absolute Reserves won 4-1 at home against Dial Square. North Herts Hatters were at home against Weston. In awful conditions on a wet boggy pitch, Weston lost their final game of the season 3-0 to a determined and hard working Hatters side who deserved the victory. PJ were too strong for the hosts coming away with all three points following a 5-2 win. On Thursday 26th April there were two games played in Division One. Wanderers were looking to finish their season in winning style in their home game against Dial Square. Wanderers played some good football at times and got their deserved breakthrough after twenty minutes when a Ricky Reynolds ball into the box from wide on the left somehow found its way into the Dial Square net. Moments before the break Wanderers doubled their lead when a loose ball fell to Ross Kilford whose powerful half volley gave the keeper no chance. The second half was pretty close with neither team creating any clear cut chances until ten minutes from full time when Ricky Reynolds found himself goal side of the defence and rounded the keeper to slot the ball into an empty net thus securing the three points for Wanderers with a 3-0 win. The Comet Hitchin Sunday Football League. Wymondley Win Division Two Cup Thriller. Last Sunday saw PJ Hitchin representing The Comet Hitchin Sunday League in the Herts Sunday Senior Cup Final. The game was played at the County Ground, Letchworth and PJ’s opponents were AFC Boars. The first half was closely contested but it was PJ that made the breakthrough with a Harry Holland goal to take a slender 1-0 lead into the interval. After the break AFC Boars found their form and went on to win the game 4-2 despite another goal from Harry Holland. It was also the Division One Cup Final last Sunday between Weston and Wymondley Park Old Boys played at Arlesey Town. After a goalless first half Weston scored twice in the second half and looked to be the team who were to collect the trophy. In fact Weston could have been three up if it hadn’t been for a stunning save from Paul Murray in the Wymondley goal. However, with just four minutes remaining Wymondley managed to pull one back through Mark Ellis to set up an exciting climax to the game. In the dying seconds of injury time Matt Gendle scored a second for Wymondley to take the game into extra time. The wind seemed to be knocked out of Weston’s sails and the impetus was certainly with Wymondley now as they dominated extra time. Darrin Buttergieg gave Wymondley the lead before Mark Ellis completed a stunning hat trick to complete the come back and give the Old Boys a 5-2 victory in their first ever cup final. HTS Bar Absolute Reserves won 3-1 at home against FC Nirankari in Division One. Also in the Division North Herts Hatters lost 4-1 against Dial Square. Wanderers and Bedford Arms played each other in a double header. In the first game which was not one for the football purists the honours finished all square with Bedford Arms opening the scoring only to see Ricky Reynolds equalise for Wanderers just before the interval. The second game produced some better football, particularly from Wanderers who went on to pick up all three points. Mark Norriss opened the scoring for Wanderers with a well taken goal after about ten minutes. In the closing seconds of the first half Bedford Arms got themselves back into the game when a high looping cross from the right found its way into the net. Wanderers wrapped up the game late on in the second half with two goals from Ross Kilford, the second following a great run by Ricky Reynolds. In Division Two CCL were at home against Hogs Head. Scott Moir opened the scoring Hogs Head after seven minutes with a tremendous speculative shot from almost the half-way line which CCL keeper Tony Wickam probably should have saved. Hogs extended their lead ten minutes later when Nigel Stewart rifled in from the edge of the box. CCL hit back five minutes from half-time to make it 1-2. The second half was evenly balanced but some stout defending by Hogs Head in the last ten minutes saw secure all three points. CCL will be crowned champions unless Hogs Head can win their last game by a massive thirty one goals. Herts United lost 3-1 at home against Jagerbomers. The final game of the day saw White Horse Kimpton win 2-0 at home against Letchworth Albion. The Premier Division Cup Final between PJ Hitchin and Oceans Eleven will take place at Hitchin Town on Sunday 22nd April 2012. Kick off will be at 7.00pm. |

The Comet Hitchin Sunday Football League. CCL one point away from Division Two Title. In the Premier Division HTS Bar Absolute were at home against Athletico Hitchin. Athletico guaranteed third place in the league following their 7-3 away win. Dial Square played against Wymondley Park Old Boys in a double header in Division One. In the first game Dial Square picked up all three points with a 3-1 victory. However, the second game was must tighter with both teams picking up a point following a 1-1 draw. Also in the Division FC Wizard played hosts to Cannon Reserves and returned to winning ways after a hard fought victory against a well organised Cannon. The game was very tight with few chances in the first half. After the restart the Wizard manager made the change which won the match when fit again talisman Kane Dougherty entered the game. Wizard seemed to move up a gear and after fifty five minutes Dougherty score an absolute wonder goal from thirty five yards, curling it over the keeper in to the top corner. Wizard completed the scoring when Neil Smith buried a corker from just inside the box. The score could have been more if the Cannon keeper had not so outstanding throughout the game. There was another double header played last week in Division One, this time between North Herts Hatters and Bedford Arms. Hatters comfortably won the first game 5-0 but they had a much tougher battle on their hands in the second game and had to dig deep to forge out a 3-2 win and pick up all six points. Weston picked up all three points against AC Malone. AC Malone were always up against it in this game against an in form Weston team who have won their last six games and matters weren’t helped when only ten players turned up to play. Weston were 3-0 up by half time with two goals from Daniel Plumb and one from Michael Bergman. The second half was one way traffic with Weston missing a hatful of chances but scoring two penalties, one from Luke Henessey and the other from Daniel Plumb completing his hat trick, making the final score 5-0 to Weston. In Division Two Athletico Arlesey were at home against CCL. CCL all but secured the Division Two title with a 10-3 victory. Although Hogs Head can still catch CCL if they win their two remaining games they would have to turn round an amazing thirty two goal deficit. Green Man lost 3-2 at home against Jagerbomers. The final game of the day saw Half Moon play at home against White Horse Kimpton where both teams picked up a point each after a 3-3 score line. However the Half Moon looked to be ending their season with a whimper as White Horse Kimpton headed into the last twenty minutes of the game with a three goal lead. However, Moon's Easter fortunes were resurrected by the introduction of seasoned Sunday Leaguers Ian Vacher, Phil Hart and Sam Roads from the bench. Within minutes Robin Packman scored from a tight-angle to reduce the arrears, Mark Sweetlove added a second direct from an inswinging corner and the comeback was completed when Roads was chopped down in the area leaving ace-marksman Packman to convert from the penalty spot. The match will be played at the County Ground, Letchworth and will kick off at 3.00pm. The Comet Hitchin Sunday Football League. Bouslama Hat Trick Wins Division Two Cup For CCL. The first cup final of the season took place last weekend and this saw CCL face Jagerbombers at Arlesey Town in the Division Two final. The game turned out to be ninety minutes of competitive football played at pace and in the right spirit. CCL scored twice in the last twenty minutes of the first half and deservedly took the two goal cushion into the half time break. Jagerbombers came out in the second half and had a real go at CCL and this was rewarded with a goal after only a few minutes by Anthony Humphries. Unfortunately Jagerbombers could not find another break through so when CCL scored two further goals the win was sealed. To their credit though Jagerbombers never gave up and kept going and tried to reduce the deficit right up until the final whistle. Getting the goals for CCL were Hamza Bouslama who bagged himself a hat trick plus Toby McNaught. In the Premier Division Ahtletico Hitchin were at home against HTS Bar Absolute. Wanderers Reserves played their final match of the season against Hogs Head. Despite going behind through a Mark Norriss penalty for Wanderers it was Hogs Head that picked up all three points with a 2-1 win. The first goal for Hogs Head was via a deflection with the second coming from a volley by Gareth Carr after the ball had struck the bar from an excellent Dave Beedell shot. The final game of the day saw White Horse Kimpton have a good 5-0 win at home against Athletico Arlesey. New teams are welcome for the 2012/13 season.
