Holbeach United 2 St Ives Town 0
Wednesday, 26 September 2007
Two goals in the closing stages of this even contest gave the Tigers victory.
A low key first half saw few openings created with Dan Moyes shooting into the side netting from Brian Liston-Clark's pass while at the other end Matt Warfield's long range strike was comfortably held by Rob Mackney.
A strong finish to the half by the Saints saw Liston-Clark test home keeper Nick Conroy and Jason King and Dan Pilsworth combine to set up Liam Kennett who again forced the home custodian into action.
Antonio Pasco had a good effort for the Tigers saved at the start of the second half while at the other end Conroy was alert to save a quickly taken free kick from Kennett.
Mackney saved in fine style from an Omar Joof header and then produced another good stop from Andy Lodge.
When St Ives replied Liston-Clark placed a header wide while Kennett shot wide when free on goal.
Liston-Clark had a back post header saved by Conroy and St Ives paid the price for missed chances in the 85th minute when Liam Nimmo broke down the left. Mackney saved his shot but Pasco followed up to convert the loose ball.
In the final minute of the match Will Fordham's diagonal pass played in Kennett whose well struck effort was tipped over in fine style by Conroy, and from the resulting corner Holbeach broke with pace through Joof whose fierce shot was turned away by Mackney only for the alert Nimmo to score from the rebound.
