Lincolnshire FA Senior Trophy
Blackstones 2 Bottesford Town 0
Tuesday, 29 April 2008
Blackstones succeeded where Boston Town, Deeping and Sleaford had earlier failed, defeating Bottesford to win the Lincolnshire Senior Trophy at Eslaforde Park.
Stones started brightly and Bottesford keeper Sam Slocomb was in early action to save a Phil Stebbing header after Richard Jones flicked on Kevin Ainslie's long throw.
Blackstones went in front after ten minutes when Dan Cotton's free kick was headed back across goal by Jones for Stebbing to scramble the ball over the line from close range.
Cotton was narrowly wide with a free kick before Bottesford's first chance saw Ian Flavell display smart reactions to keep out a John Barrass header.
Cotton volleyed over after his free kick came back off the defensive wall, while at the other end Flavell was relieved to see Steve Harrop's overhead kick clear the crossbar after he failed to gather a cross from the right.
With the rain pouring down conditions were becoming difficult and early in the second half Flavell had to be alert to turn a Phil Jackman shot from distance round the post.
At the other end a low free kick from Ainslie saw Slocomb save well at the foot of the post.
Bottesford were enjoying a good share of the possession but Stones worked hard to limit their chances. Substitute Simon Roach headed wide when well placed while at the other end Stebbing flicked a header over from Cotton's left wing corner.
Blackstones' win was sealed eight minutes from time by top scorer Stebbing. Receiving possession near the corner flag he worked his way in from the touchline before beating Slocomb at his near post with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area.
