Peterborough Northern Star 9 Daventry United 0
Saturday, 26 April 2008
United's promotion bid collapsed in dramatic fashion against runners up Star.
Daventry travelled with just twelve players after late call offs and manager Darren Foster had to stand in between the posts, so the task of obtaining the point needed was always going to be difficult.
Chances were few and far between in the first half with Lee Reynolds missing United's best opening as his shot was deflected wide after he combined with Ian Waldock. From the corner Tony Burt headed over.
United were punished after 24 minutes when Adam Scotcher dispossessed Burt and drilled a low shot into the far corner from the edge of the box.
Scotcher turned provider ten minutes before the break, crossing for top scorer Karl Gibbs to control and fire home.
News of Rothwell Corinthians' two goal interval lead at Buckingham left United with at all to do and when Alan Haine's solo effort gave Star a 49th minute third the visitors looked a demoralised side.
Two minutes later Gibbs robbed before scoring his second of the afternoon and his hat trick arrived four minutes before the hour as he capitalised on space in the box.
Two minutes later Gibbs turned provider playing in strike partner Ryan Francis who beat a defender and cleverly lifted the ball over a shell shocked Foster. Substitute Ronnie Fortune scored number seven for Star after 63 minutes after Francis and Mohammed Sohail combined to open up the United defence.
Francis ran clear to score his second after 76 minutes and a minute later Fortune cut in from the left, crossed for Gibbs to head back across goal and pick out Sohail to round off the scoring with a close range header.
