Division One

Rothwell Corinthians  1    Daventry Town  3

Saturday, 08 March 2008

Town moved to within two points of the Division One championship with this Sergeant's Lawn success on an afternoon when their set piece expertise proved critical to the outcome.

The pacesetters almost made an ideal start when a Tom James free kick was flicked on by Tom Berwick for Paul Saunders to volley over.

Corinths took the lead on the quarter hour with a bizarre goal. Dave Briffa chased down goalkeeper Joe Melling's clearance and the ball trickled over the line before the custodian could retrieve the situation.

Daventry struggled to find any fluency in their play on a blustery afternoon but they levelled a minute before the break. A quickly taken short corner routine on the left between Ryan Byrne and Richard Wesley saw the ball crossed to the far post where Josh O'Grady rose highest to head home.

O'Grady missed a chance to give Daventry the lead early in the second half, miskicking at the far post after Wesley had taken a return pass from Berwick to centre from the left, and shortly afterwards Corinths keeper Tom Cross stuck out a leg to divert Wesley's effort tp safety.

On the hour Corinths had the chance to regain the lead when Chris Dunn's free kick was flicked on by Briffa and Tony Ielapi volleyed over the visiting crossbar.

Daventry took the lead after 68 minutes when the Corinth's defence failed to deal with an O'Grady flag kick from the right and Danny Nelson headed in from close range.

Town's 22nd successive win was sealed a minute into stoppage time when another O'Grady corner was turned in by Chris Godwin from close range.
