Desborough Town 2 Blackstones 0
Saturday, 08 September 2007
Desborough maintained their fine start to the campaign with a convincing victory over a disappointing Blackstones at the Waterworks Field.
Former Stones midfielder Jamie Gilsenan kicked off an eventful afternoon with Ar Tarn's seventh minute opener, firing home from the edge of the box after Blackstones failed to clear their lines following a corner which had seen Michael Byrne denied by a goalline clearance.
Ian Flavell in the visiting goal saved Jamie O'Neill's flicked header while at the other end Graeme Epps failed to get any power in his shot when well placed.
The woodwork rescued Blackstones twice towards the end of the half, keeping out a Michael Byrne effort and a Gilsenan chip, while a rare Stones chance saw a Ross Nicholls header from a corner blocked on the line.
Early in the second half Luke Kennedy was just too high after a solo run for the visitors but Ar Tarn soon regained the initiative.
A short corner to Gilsenan saw the midfielder's chip into the box headed against the crossbar by Tom Mills. while O'Neill was off target with an overhead kick after a good run from Michael Stanton.
With nineteen minutes remaining Gilsenan was dismissed for a second caution but Stones rarely threatened to make their man advantage count.
Substitute Tony Page was thwarted by Flavell as Desborough sought to wrap up the win and in the 90th minute Danny Marlow's pass found another replacement Eddie Mills whose cross from the right was converted by brother Tom.
In the fifth minute of stoppage time Tom Mills broke down the centre only to be impeded by Flavell who was red carded. Stand in keeper Ross Watson saved superby to deny Tom Mills from the resulting spot kick.
