First Round Qualifying
St Margaretsbury 3 Northampton Spencer 2
Saturday, 08 September 2007
Spencer suffered their first defeat of the season as their late fightback went unrewarded.
Ben Herod's second minute goal frm a Tony Smith cross had the home side in front at the interval, and with Spencer dwn to ten men after Ian Giles received a second caution the tie looked all but settled. Herod scored a second with a left foot volley after 56 minutes. Andrew Birnie added a third for St Margaretsbury after 68 minutes, firing home from the edge of the box after collecting a throw in and the Millers looked down and out.
Spencer substitute Tommy Stratford reduced the arrears with a quarter of an hour to play with a well taken goal and five minutes later Pete Gregory gave Spencer renewed hope with a second, heading in a free kick, but the home side held on to win as Millers pressure failed to reap further reward.
Spencer: Oliver Urquhart, Simon McCarthy, Ian Giles, Gaston Guei, Jamie Langley, Josh Urquhart, Scott Marshall, Phil Cassidy, Matt Collins, Chris Kirby (Tommy Stratford), Chris Davies (Pete Gregory).
