This meeting of the Premier's have and have nots ended in a predictable big win for the star studded Tulips.
Tom James opened the Spalding account five minutes in from a Francis Green cross with the in form Shane Tolley adding an eighth minute second after Cotton and Green combined.
On the quarter hour Tolley scored his second from a Cotton corner.
New man Chris Hall claimed a debut goal with an 18 yard strike after 21 minutes with Tolley making it five from a James cross ten minutes before the break.
Ross Whitney put the Romans on the scoresheet five minutes before the break.
There was no let up from Spalding on resumption.
Tolley took his season's goal tally for the season to eight after 51 minutes, netting at the second attempt after his first shot came off the crossbar and newcomer Cotton scored a debut goal from a Green centre two minutes later.
Luke Kennedy made the visiting tally eight with a penalty awarded for a foul on James three minutes past the hour.
Cotton made it a three goal bow by scoring after 81 and 82 minutes and Kennedy completed the scoring a minute from the end.
