Saturday, 01 September 2012

The Saints took the honours in this eagerly awaited meeting of two of the title favourites.

St Ives took charge from the off forcing a series of corners and forcing Spalding back on defence.

The opening goal arrived after 17 minutes, with a Karl Gibbs flick finding Conor Washington on the left. the striker cut inside and fired goalward with a deflection off defender Miles Chamberlain leaving keeper Lee Drury rooted to the spot.

Before Spalding could recover the uphill task became steeper. Scott Musgrove's clumsy challenge on Gibbs saw a penalty awarded, Jon Stead converting with 19 minutes on the block.

The Tulips improved towards the break and on resumption they quickly got back into the game with a 48th minute goal. Liam Bull's right wing run saw his cross deflected onto his own bar by Dan Newman, with Francis Green finishing from close range.
