| Club History |
Hatfield Main FC was formed in 1936 as a representative of the local mining industry in Dunscroft, Hatfield and Stainforth. Their early years were spent in the Doncaster & District League. In 1955, the club striving for a higher standard of football joined the Yorkshire League and the mid 60?s saw them runners up in Division 2 and Division 1. They also won the West Riding Cup in 1962 and 1963. With the formation of the Northern Counties East league in 1982 Hatfield Main became a founder member.
In 1988-89, Main achieved runners-up spot in the Premier Division but with the departure of most of the management team and players the following season the club suffered relegation.
When John Reed returned as manager in 1993-94 the club just missed out on promotion, however the following year saw them as Division 1 Champions and promoted to the Premier Division.. After an unbelievable run the following season, they became Premier Division Champions. Due to ground grading regulations however, promotion to the Unibond League was denied and the manager and all the team left the club.
John Storey became manager at the start of 1996-97 but a string of poor results saw him relieved of his duties in February 1997. Dave Fell was appointed to replace him and kept Main in the Premier Division. However, in October, Fell resigned due to work commitments and the fact that he was travelling from the Bradford area, and most of his Leeds and Bradford based players also left. Paul Morrell, former manager of Thorne Colliery took over at the beginning of November 1998, but the side were relegated to Division 1.
In 2003 the side left the Northern Counties East league and entered a side in the local Doncaster Senior League. They became Premier Division Champions in 2004-05 under manager Kevin Nelthorpe. The decision was taken to attempt the long climb back to a higher level and season 2005-06 saw the club become members of the Central Midlands League Premier Division. Although a good start was made, internal problems saw Nelthorpe and most of the team leave well before Christmas and player James Irwin agreed to take over. After only a couple of games Irwin tendered his resignation and Ian Pickles agreed to try his luck for the remainder of the season. Results were very poor and many players were used as the club struggled to fulfil its fixtures, but a bottom 3 spot was avoided.
For the next season a new management team were appointed in Mark Turner and Ryan Saunders, formerly with local rivals Thorne Colliery, and many new players recruited. Ex Doncaster Rovers player Mark Hine joined the coaching staff and hopes were high for a much more successful season, these proved to be correct with the side finishing top of the Premier Division. A couple of months into the new season however, Turner and Hine left to go to NCEL strugglers Brodsworth, and Gary Brown and Mark Sheppard were invited to step up from local Sunday football to try their hand at a higher level. We are confident that we have made the correct choice and look forward to the future.
